Lunch-hour cosmetology catches on in city

PUNE: If you think that cosmetology and dermatology treatments are sought only by those with blemishes, or by people who want to look young, you're in for a surprise. People as young as 16 are visiting doctors for a number of treatments, including laser hair removal, chemical peels, removal of warts, acne scars and so on. What's more surprising is that, in most cases, the blemishes are minuscule, almost invisible.

Speaking recently at a conference organised by the research society of the B J Medical College, cosmetologist Dilip Shah spoke on the topic Lunch-hour Cosmetology'. As the name suggests, said Shah, these treatments last from five to 15 minutes, and so can be done even during the lunch hour. "All these surgeries are non-invasive and require less time. Only if you are undergoing laser hair removal treatment and chemical peels do you have to take care, since you will have to make sure that you use sunscreens after treatment without fail," said Shah.

He cited awareness as the prime reason for the spurt in people opting for cosmetology, Shah said that removal of acne scars, warts, moles, freckles, chemical peels, laser procedures for unwanted hair and non-surgical face-lifts are some of the most commonly opted for treatments.

"In some cases, the issues are so minor that they do not warrant surgery or medical attention. But the desire to look perfect draws people into it," said Shah.

According to Shah, there are cases where cosmetology is taken very seriously, for instance when prospective brides are rejected by suitors because of dermatological problems.

"I would have to say, though, that men are equally concerned about their looks and there are an equal number of men and women who seek treatment," Shah said.

"What has also changed is that all the people coming in for treatment are not from the upper and the elite classes but rather across classes. It is like a beauty parlour where until some years ago, only the rich would visit. Today, everyone makes it a point to visit the parlour regularly," he explained.

Reiterating that a face carries a lot of importance, Shah said that scars left by something like acne not only affects the face but also the psyche of the person and can lead to depression which only further increases the acne. "Also, when it comes to people who want to go in for non-surgical facelifts to remove wrinkles, it would help if these people came to us before their faces started to sag, he added.

The other speaker in the session was dermatologist Naren Pathwardhan, who spoke on the newer trends in dermato surgery and lasers and also spoke of how vitiligo was considered a social stigma despite an increased attempt to create awareness on the same.
