Can a laser replace your razor?

It's an extremely tempting beauty promise: Get a laser hair-removal treatment and have smooth, hairless legs forever. Is there any woman who wouldn't sign up on the spot if it were that simple?

Well, it's not exactly. As we head into the busiest time of year for laser centers, we thought it might be helpful to get expectations in check.

"We're definitely seeing a boom in the laser hair-removal business in our city," says Dr. Joseph Banis Jr., instructor of plastic surgery at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, "but it might be more accurate to call it 'laser hair reduction.'

"It takes a series of treatments -- often as many as half a dozen spaced over several months -- to get visible, lasting results," he said. And those results are typically not complete hairlessness.

Most people see slowed growth and much, much finer hair, says according to Dr. Cathering Case, a partner at Total Woman OB/GYN, where hair removal also is offered. "It usually takes about 4 treatments to see a significant reduxtion." Rare side effects, caused by human error, include lightened or darkened pigmentation.

The treatments are especially dramatic for people with very dark, very thick hair; much less effective for women with light skin and light hair -- which is why a consultation is key. That can give a patient a good estimate of how many appointments might be involved.

For that reason, most local laser centers offer a one-time price (around $1,500) that covers you indefinitely -- or until you're reached optimal hair reduction.

That said, the immediate effects of a laser treatment are similar to waxing; you're hairless until the next wave of follicles starts producing. So, you could book an appointment a few days before Derby and be smooth at the track.

Just don't expect to stay that way ... unless you do the follow-up.

Indeed it is not a one time process. It takes a while to get lasting results from laser hair removal.
